The Vendramin Family Archive

From 31 January 2025 to 25 January 2026

Curated by Chiara Squarcina, Ilaria Peruzzet, Monica Viero

The House of Carlo Goldoni with its museum contains a very important Theatrical Library that holds the archives of the ancient Teatro di San Luca, built in 1622 by the Vendramin family, among the most prestigious members of the Venetian aristocracy. Of the ancient Venetian theatres, it is the one that has existed for the longest time, and it continues its activities in the present (having been renamed the Teatro Goldoni).

The Vendramin family, enrolled in the Venetian patriciate in 1381, owned some small houses in the parish of San Luca that were destroyed by fire in 1595. When they had to invest new capital in the reconstruction of the site, it was decided to erect a theatre of comedy. Hence family became theatre-owners, with varied fortunes, from about 1630 until the mid-20th century, when the Municipality of Venice made a declaration of public utility of the theatre complex and expropriated it in 1956.

The Vendramin record group is therefore an essential source for studies of the Venetian theatre, in particular with regard to both Carlo Goldoni’s work at the Teatro di San Luca and other Venetian theatres, and the presence in Venice of important comic actors of the time, such as Antonio Sacchi, Giuseppe Imer and many others.

The archive contains all the documents concerning the foundation of the theatre and its subsequent restoration at various times, together with hundreds of letters and contracts of actors in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as records of expenses, inventories, files of records of civil and criminal cases, lists of properties and tenants of theatre boxes, and the indexes of comedies performed in the theatre. In addition it contains the three original contracts between Goldoni and the nobleman Francesco Vendramin, impresario of the Teatro di San Luca, and some thirty autograph letters from the playwright to Vendramin himself.

Curated by Chiara Squarcina and Pier Paolo Pancotto
In collaboration with Galleria de’ Foscherari and Francesco Ribuffo

In the late 1980s, Eva Marisaldi (Bologna, 1966) made her debut on the exhibition scene, and then took part in two editions of the Venice Biennale (1993 and 2001), among much else.

From the outset, there clearly emerged her aptitude for observing the world and her ability to translate this experience into visual compositions difficult to catalogue by traditional standards and conveyed in various expressive media: installations, sculptures, graphics and videos.

With a gift for reflecting on and analysing her surroundings, Eva Marisaldi focuses above all on the private sphere of the individual, social reality and the environment, creating micro-narratives where analogies and contrasts prevail over the essence of the narrative.

The artist synthesises the results of her investigation in visual, auditory and literary elements as semantically dense as they are expressively linear, where fantasy alternates with reflection, poetry with irony.

The project designed for Casa Goldoni is proof of this. It develops in all the rooms of the building and consists of a series of original works, differing in technique and type but united by a common source of inspiration: the playwright whom the museum is dedicated to and his work in the theatre, as well as the world of entertainment and stage representation in general.

IMPRONTE DI UN MASCARER
Luogo spazio e tempo del gesto

From 15 April to 1 October 2023

Venice, Carlo Goldoni’s House

Curated by Chiara Squarcina and Tobia Dall’Osto

The exhibition Impronte di un Mascarer – luogo, spazio e tempo del gesto (A Mask-Maker’s Casts: Place, Space and the Time of Gesture) will be installed on the ground and first floors in the form of a display of masks and their casts: small negative alabaster casts and large positive masks in papier-mâché and resin.

Artist Gualtiero Dall’Osto, the creator of the project, will offer many personal reflections on these particular symbolic objects, which are not only associated with Commedia dell’Arte but also a means of concealing a person’s identity from prying eyes. Masks are rich in meanings, both real and virtual, not least those closely connected to the art of their creator, the mask-maker.
In fact, due to Dall’Osto’s inspired proposal to exhibit his creations, it will be possible to analyse the hidden meanings, including anthropological interpretations, connected to the mask and its creator. The exhibition will also present the creative phases of this art and how it relates to today’s world in a vivid illustration of the inexhaustible fascination of masks.

The project will also be an opportunity to explore the history of mask-making. In fact, wearing masks was widely documented in Venice as early as 1271, the same year that the mask-makers formed a guild together with painters. Due to the increasingly frequent use of masks, especially during Carnival festivities, on 10 April 1436, the guild managed to obtain a special statute known as the mariegola, which regulated their activity. With this act, the Serenissima officially recognised their importance and artistic influence.

On display for the first time at the Carlo Goldoni House Museum will be a selection of the precious marionettes conserved and exhibited at the Museo Civico d’Arte Industriale – Palazzo Davia Bargellini in Bologna. This marks a consolidation of the rapport that already exists between the two museums, since both are custodians of a similar Venetian-made heritage.

The exhibition of marionettes fosters an appreciation of unique examples of their kind, whose state of conservation will rekindle echoes of past performances, emphasising their educational and social value.
A part of Carlo Goldoni House Museum’s own historical collection of marionettes will also remain on show for visitors to examine and admire the care and wealth of intricate details that went into the creation of these agile, multi-jointed puppets, which were a common source of theatrical entertainment in Venetian noble residences.

The Venetian puppets will be joined by a selection from the collection held by Museo Civico d’Arte Industriale – Palazzo Davia Bargellini, which comprises 74 puppets, nine horses and a monkey, purchased in 1922. A nucleus that includes five sets of scenery, undoubtedly linked to Bologna and Bibbiena, whose façades bear the coat of arms of the Albicini family from Forlì.

THE NATURE OF THINGS
Installation by Anna Moro Lin

From December 13th 2013 to February 25th 2014
House of Carlo Goldoni, Venice

The Nature of Things shows how life begins and also the dynamics of the animate and inanimate world, the spontaneous shift from order to disorder that os called in scientific terms “entropia”.

This consideration led Anna Moro Lin to carry out her project. Through a sequence of adaptations of her favourite materials – paper, gauze, fibre – the artist has tried to show the changing nature of things, their fragility and perishable qualities.

On a platform covered with black cloth, she has laid a strip of white fabric in the middle. This is gathered at both ends into two spools of different sizes. This process can be seen in the video and which clearly conveys the passage of time. On the left and right are irregular whitened shapes which have been faded and enervated by using a bleaching technique, manipulating and reprocessing the previous works. In their bareness the progressively show rips and signs of deterioration, finally disintegrating into frayed fragments.

Two large open books bear the words of Lucretius in the centre pages, taken from De Rerum Natura. Lucretius explains how everything has its origins in the grouping of corpuscles, generative bodies or seeds, forming all living creatures depending on how they combine and move around. And like everything else, once they have reached their zenith, disintegration and decomposition sets in and you return to the prime elements of matter which will once again aggregate in other bodies.

The whole work has been created by using a process of subtraction, starting at the end and then reaching the prime elements, acknowledging and saving the value of ‘what remains’ in every phase of transformation.

ANTONELLA ZAGGIA
Cartemarcíe. Gioelli di carta

From May 18th to September 17th 2013
Casa di Carlo Goldoni, Venezia

The applied art of Antonella Zaggia, a Venetian artist who has for years worked in a “theatrical” setting, arrives at Casa Goldoni with her collection of papier mâché jewels.

These objects make use of the most diverse of materials: glass, pearls, rafia and twigs, metal, resin, hot-rolled nylon, paper worked in various ways, including gold and silver leaf and the combination and contrast with elements drawn from the crafts tradition of Venice, such as the venturine of Murano and tiny conterie. The resulting compositions offer great visual appeal, and go to form brooches, pendants “simulating” glass pods, nutshells, “lava” containing gems and tiny “volcanoes” with eruptions of pearls on synthetic thread.

Antonella Zaggia, venetian woman realized for several years theatrical props, builds puppets, works with paper soaked, exercised the goldsmith, is an actress and directs performances of puppetry.

NOT ONLY GIUSEPPE VERDI.
The unpublished librettos by Francesco Maria Piave

From March 9th 2013 to May 14th 2013
House of Carlo Goldoni, Venice

Francesco Maria Piave (Murano, 1810 – Milan, 1876), was a celebrated librettist and composer from Murano, whose most prolific work was for Giuseppe Verdi, for whom he wrote ten librettos, including for “La dame aux camélias” by Alexandre Dumas.

The Casa Goldoni has a precious and unpublished collection of 20 autograph librettos by Piave, which come from the Museo del Vetro di Murano, to which they were donated by the family.

The bicentenary of Verdi’s birth, which takes place this year, provides the opportunity to display these rare pieces that represent a fundamental element to investigate the cultural, human, social and political relationship between the librettist and Verdi himself.

VENETIAE CIVITAS ADMIRABILIS. Ways of seeing. Two titles for a collective work, resulting from a recent research project at Verdeacqua: on the one hand the archetypal city, the civitas admirabilis on the other hand, the Venice of today, terrifyingly concrete in its fragility. An unusual work composed of 25 cardboard cubes, 30 centimetres each side, and 150 refractions of the same ray of light: Venice.

Just as Goldoni represented the Venetian reality of his time on the world stage in all its innumerable complexities, changes, small lives with universal meaning, Verdeacqua attempts to tell of the Venice of today through details, minimal knowledge, and daily realities.

A golden thread joins Goldoni’s Venice to the Venice as perceived by Verdeacqua: the passion of those who live there. The love of those who know it to be UNIQUE in the world and would like it to remain intact for ever in its ideal and admirabilis form.

With the passing of time the relentless reality is changing, as are the visions of those who stand watching and the faces of the 25 cubes change, midway between eye-witness account and imaginary vision.

Verdeacqua’s new work, taking the great Carlo Goldoni as its inspiration, invites the visitors/spectators to see the charm of Venice, to love its many hidden folds and to pose questions about the consequences of its evolution.

The ARCI-Verdeaqua art group was established in 1995 as a workshop for adults interested in experimenting, processing and conveying their own expressive needs through art. The group has displayed its work in important exhibitions, installations, and venues.

Participants: Arrigo Battistini, Bianca Benedet, Amina Coin, Paola Degan, Elisabetta De Pieri, Adriana Garbini, Antonella Giada, Lida Lado, Luisa Marchesi, Maria Maestri, Ornella Michieli, Michela Orbani, Anna Panella, Mary Rotolo, Lisanna Risato, Mara Rustichelli, Daniela Schiavo, Lorena Sossella, Maria Grazia Staffieri, Luisa Tarenzi, Sandra Voltolina, Adriana Vianello, Liliana Vianello Drago, Bruna Zamana, Gisella Zanus
